The Egypt Expedition - war, science and ... archaeology!
In 1798, instead of conquering Great Britain, Napoleon opted for an unexpected destination: Egypt. Although the campaign had a military basis, it was also accompanied by a scientific mission. 167 scholars were on board the French ships.
The expedition began with the conquest of Alexandria, followed by a victory in the famous Battle of the Pyramids. However, the situation quickly deteriorated when Admiral Nelson's fleet destroyed Napoleon's ships at Abukir, cutting his army off from France.
Although the Egyptian expedition ended in military defeat, it brought Europe something far more significant: an enormous increase in interest in ancient Egypt. It was during this time that the Rosetta Stone was discovered, which later enabled the decipherment of hieroglyphics and founded modern Egyptology.
The set contains:
- A figure of General Jean-Baptiste Kléber - a charismatic and experienced commander who took command of the Eastern Army after Napoleon's return to France.
- A figure of Lieutenant Pierre-François Bouchard - a young French officer of the Pioneer Corps who, on July 15, 1799, made one of the most important archaeological discoveries of all time: the Rosetta Stone.
- A Mamluk figure - a representative of the elite Muslim cavalry that formed Egypt's main defensive force in the battles against the French troops. The figurine is designed with great attention to detail: from the turban and robe to the traditional sabre.
- A model of the Rosetta Stone with an imprint - an absolutely unique piece. The stone is reproduced as a model with a durable imprint showing a fragment of the characteristic trilingual inscription (hieroglyphics, Demotic and Greek). This discovery later made it possible to decipher the Egyptian hieroglyphs and revolutionized our knowledge of ancient Egypt.
- A fragment of the Egyptian landscape - a miniature diorama over 20 centimeters long depicting a section of the Nile Valley. Here you will find a date palm, a coastal strip with delicate vegetation and a section of a desert landscape.
- A decorative plaque with the name of the set - an elegant block with the long-lasting imprint "Campagne d'Égypte 1798-1801" - fits perfectly into the display case. This detail gives the set a professional touch and makes it a real eye-catcher on the shelf.
