Soviet armored personnel carrier in the Polish army The BWP-1 is a Soviet infantry fighting vehicle that entered service in the mid-1960s. As the first mass-produced vehicle of its kind, the BMP-1 combined mobility, amphibious capability and more powerful armament than previously deployed infantry fighting vehicles. The BMP-1 became a widely used export product and for decades formed the backbone of mechanized formations in many armies around the world, including Poland. The first units arrived in Poland in 1973/74. For a long time it formed the basis of the Polish mechanized infantry, but in recent years it has become increasingly clear that its heyday is over.
