From Czech engineering to German armament! In 1935, the Czechoslovakian ČKD factory began developing a new light tank. The result was the LT vz. 38, a modern, reliable and well-armored vehicle for its time. Although it was developed for the Czechoslovak army, the Third Reich took over the project after the occupation of Czechoslovakia. The result was the Panzerkampfwagen 38(t), a light tank that quickly gained recognition in the Wehrmacht. The A version took part in the September (1939) and French (1940) campaigns and was characterized by its effectiveness and reliability, the 3.7 cm gun and the riveted construction. The armor and excellent handling characteristics made the vehicle superior to many German light tanks of the time. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Germany, some of these tanks ended up in the army of the First Slovak Republic. It was a puppet state, completely dependent on the Third Reich. Its troops took part in operations alongside Germany and supported it both in the attack on Poland and later in the aggression against the USSR. Although production was discontinued in 1942, the chassis of this tank served as the basis for many other vehicles, from Hetzer and Marder tank destroyers to self-propelled guns.
