The Volkswagen Transporter T3 was first introduced in 1979 and quickly became It became a legend in the automotive industry. Produced from May of that same year, it bore the factory designation T3 and continued the classic rear-engined layout. In 1985, the Multivan version debuted, and a Syncro-powered variant was introduced in parallel, produced until 1992. A total of over 1.3 million T3s were produced, including many special versions designed for emergency services, particularly the fire department.

In the German fire department, the T3 primarily served as an MTF (Mannschaftstransportfahrzeug) vehicle for transporting rescuers, a mobile command post during small operations, and a logistics vehicle. In smaller units, it was used as a KLAF (Kleineinsatzfahrzeug), handling minor interventions such as insect removal, removing cats from trees, cleaning up local floods, and other minor incidents.
Simplicity, reliability, and low operating costs made the T3 one of the most frequently used vehicles in the red colors of the German fire department.
