HMS Upholder (P37) was a U-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrongs in Barrow-in-Furness. She was laid down on October 30, 1939, and commissioned on October 31, 1940.
The vessel was distinguished by its unusual design. In addition to four internal torpedo tubes, she had two external bow tubes, making her one of the most offensive U-class vessels. Throughout her service, the ship was commanded by Lieutenant Commander Malcolm David Wanklyn, one of the Royal Navy's most distinguished submarine commanders.
During 24 combat patrols, the ship sank over 93,000 tons of enemy shipping, including warships, troop transports and merchant ships. Her most notable successes include the sinking of Conte Rosso, Neptunia and Oceania and damaged numerous key Axis vessels. For his outstanding achievements, Wanklyn was awarded the Victoria Cross.
