The history of the Panzer V Panther Ausf. D
The first production Panther
Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Ausf. D, also designated Sd.Kfz. 171, was the first production version of the Panther. The tank was developed after the experience of fighting on the Eastern Front, where German troops encountered Soviet T-34s. Production of the Ausf version. D began in January 1943.
One of the most distinctive features of the vehicle was the sloped front hull armor. The 80 mm thick plating, set at an angle, provided more protection than its thickness alone would suggest. The tank's silhouette was complemented by wide tracks, a long barrel and the cylindrical commander's turret characteristic of the early version.
Armament and combat debut
The main armament of the Panther was the 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70 gun. The tank was also equipped with MG 34 machine guns.
Panther Ausf. D made its combat debut in the summer of 1943 during the Battle of Kursk. The first actions showed the capabilities of the new design, but also its imperfection: early tanks struggled with, among other things, failures of the drive system.
The experience gained in service was used to develop subsequent versions of the Panther.
Details of the Panzer V Panther Ausf. D block model from COBI
Distinctive silhouette and camouflage
The model from COBI recreates the most important features of the Panther Ausf. D: inclined front of the hull, turret with a long barrel, running gear and side shields. Tri-color camouflage in shades of sand, green and brown gives it a distinctive look. There is a tactical number 523 on the tower. It is a detail that catches the eye and helps create a coherent exhibition with other models of COBI military vehicles.
Moving parts
Panther V from COBI is a model that can not only be placed on a shelf but also set to a selected scene on a diorama. The rotating turret and movable barrel allow you to change the position of the weapons. The tracks move as you move the tank, and opening hatches and flaps allow you to take a closer look at its structure.
Removable Maybach engine
Under the opening hatch there is a Maybach HL 230 P30 block engine. It can be removed from the engine compartment and placed next to the tank, for example when arranging a technical inspection scene.
Figure included
The model is accompanied by a figure that allows you to create a small scene around the tank.
Tank crew member - wears a black armored suit and a cap. He has headphones that can be placed on his head. A replica of the MP 40 submachine gun completes the equipment.
The figure complements the model and allows you to create your own scene or historical diorama.
A plate for a collector
The set includes an information plate with the name Panzer V Panther Ausf. D and scale 1:35. Placed next to the finished tank, it gives the exhibition a collectible character.
Collector's corner
COBI model in 1:35 scale
The 1:35 scale is popular in military modeling. Thanks to it, the Panther can be compared with other historical COBI vehicles made in the same scale and included in a larger collection or diorama.
The finished model is 240 mm long and 110 mm wide. Its height is 120 mm with the antenna raised or 80 mm with the antenna lowered. This is a size that allows you to conveniently display the tank:
• on the shelf
• in a display case
• in the collection of vehicles from World War II
• in a historical diorama
Without stickers
No stickers—only durable prints
Model markings are applied as durable prints directly onto the bricks, eliminating the need for stickers.
This solution ensures:
• an aesthetically pleasing finish for the completed tank
• resistance of the markings to abrasion
• preservation of the model's appearance during play and display
• an easier building process without the need to apply stickers
